Government officials say a Saginaw-area soldier has been killed while serving in Iraq.
The US Department of Defense says 36-year-old Ralph Porras of Merrill was on patrol Saturday in Yusufiyah, Iraq when enemy mortar fire hit his unit.
Yusufiyah is about ten miles south of Baghdad.
Defense officials didn't release information about Porras' rank or unit.
Survivors include his wife Christine and his 16-year-old son Gabriel.
Neighbor Debi Frasle says the September 11 terror attacks of nearly five years ago inspired Porras to join the Army.
