Ask just about any driver and they'll tell you the same thing.
"It's pretty bad out there."
"The surface of the bridge is pretty rough."
"It's in very poor shape right now."
It's no secret the Dunckel bridge over U.S. 127 is in rough shape, but now M-DOT plans to do something about it. The bridge will be closed for a face-lift throughout the summer, taking a toll on local business and commuters. Just ask Okemos High School teacher Gloria Rozeboom.
"It'll be very difficult," she said. "I'd be forced to go through town on Mt. Hope and that's in very bad shape also."
Gloria drives the stretch daily, and she's just one of hundreds. Andrew Brieschke uses the bridge everyday to get to work too. It's part of his hour-long commute.
"Not being from the area it's really the only way i know how to get to work," he said.
And it's not just the bridge closing up shop. The ramps at the Jolly Road exit will be out of service too. That's leaving Teresa Christle scratching her head, trying to find a different route to the post office on Collins Road.
"Maybe try to mail stuff through work and try to find alternatives so i won't have to come through this mess hopefully," she said.
But the construction should bring relief to drivers in the coming months. The bridge will be widened to four lanes and sidewalks will be added as well. It's a silver lining for commuters.
"Maybe in the long run it would be best to have that road repaired."
"Temporary pain for a long-term gain."
A pain drivers will just have to get used to.
