Two inmates commandeered a garbage truck Thursday morning and drove through a fence at a Muskegon prison during a failed escape.
A female guard was badly beaten by the prisoners and is in the hospital. The inmates are back in custody.
Cecil Hawkins and Jeffrey Jowske took control of the garbage truck near a dumpster outside the kitchen at the medium-security Muskegon Correctional Facility.
They drove through an inner fence but were caught as one tried to get over the prison's outer fence, says a spokesman for the Michigan Department of Corrections.
The garbage truck driver was punched in the face but is OK.
One of the prisoners was cut badly after getting caught in razor wire along the 12-foot-high outer fence.
