Lansing Police officers say there are many things homeowners can do to make sure their home is safe.

Authorities say criminals look for unlocked doors, full mailboxes, un-kept lawns, and seclusion when stalking their prey.

Police say driveways without cars are other signs that no one may be home. Police say homeowners should become friendly with their neighbors and lean on them for support when out of town.

Travelers should also make sure their home looks lived in. Police say that includes leaving the television or radio on and using automated timed lights.
