West Nile Confirmed in Ingham County

Ingham County Health Department confirmed the positive test results were all found this month. Three birds in East Lansing, one bird in Meridian Township, one bird and a mosquito pond in Lansing.

The virus is transmitted to humans by mosquitos that have bitten infected birds. Health experts are now telling people to use bug spray with DEET, get rid of any standing water in their yards, cover exposed skin when outside and make sure screens on your home are in good condition.

80 percent of people who are exposed to West Nile Virus never even show symptoms. 20 percent experience flu-like symptoms. One in every 150 develops a serious illness.
