With summer vacation quickly approaching for Michigan schools, the state is trying to fight against summer learning decline.

The Michigan Department of Education launched a new initiative to increase achievement for students throughout the summer with The Family Fundamentals for Summer Learning Kit.

The kit contains more than 200 literacy activities for students from Kindergarten through second grade. State officials say summer learning decline affects more than half of the state's students.

Educators stress to parents they should read to their children as much as possible. It takes more than just providing reading material for them.

Another way to keep kids active during the summer is to engage them in conversation. This will help build their oral and verbal skills. Educators also say making your kids write in a journal allows them to keep their writing skills sharp.

The summer learning kit can be found on the Internet at www.michigan.gov/mde.
