Plan to Wipe Out Gas Tax

Backers of a constitutional amendment says they will know within two weeks whether lawmakers will back a plan to increase the state sales tax and wipe out the state's gas tax as a means of raising money for road work around the state.

Rep. Jack Shackleton says the savings for drivers will be real, but others are not so sure. The sales tax could raise an extra $200-$300 million for road construction. Some will call that a tax increase or at the very least a tax shift.

The Michigan Chamber of Commerce has not taken a stance on the issue but expresses concerns over the cost to companies doing business here.

The governor has not taken a stance either.
