Thousands of collectable coins are up for grabs at the Michigan Department of Treasury's Unclaimed Property Auction. Those looking for rare coins and currency packed the former state surplus facility in Lansing.
More than 500 lots of collectibles were being auctioned today. Among the pieces were foreign currencies such as gold Kruggerands, worth more than $1,500.
Other items included Dwight D. Eisenhower silver dollars, a gold plated Susan B. Anthony dollar and dollar pieces that date back to the late 19th century.
Organizers say this event usually auctions off furniture and cars, but today was a chance for future riches. Another auction will be held on July 24. That event will feature jewelry and other collectibles.
