A man accused of smothering his ten-month-old son as he fled police does not seem to understand the charges against him.
Twenty-five-year-old John Murphy the Third of Newaygo County is charged with manslaughter in the death of his son, Jayden Murphy.
He appeared briefly in district court Wednesday and was ordered to undergo competency testing after Murphy's lawyer questioned the man's understanding of the charges.
Murphy had been pulled over August 6 for a traffic violation, and then sped away.
Police say after the car crashed into a tree, Murphy took Jayden from the vehicle and ran into some nearby woods, where he smothered him.
