Using Chickens to Learn More About West Nile

In less than three years since it was first detected in New, York the West Nile virus has almost been detected in every state. The virus carried by mosquitoes has already been discovered this year in 9 states. Several states are using chickens to learn more about the virus.

Since mosquitoes feed on birds, by drawing blood from the chickens, health officials can determine if West Nile has arrived. A positive test means infected mosquitoes are near.

More than 4000 Americans were stricken with the virus last year resulting in 284 deaths. The wet spring across the nation means even greater risk of infection.
