Nancy Romano of Jackson plead not guilty Thursday to 62 felony counts in connection with the embezzlement of $1.5 million dollars from AAA Michigan.
Prosecutors allege Romano embezzled the money over the last decade. She worked for AAA for 36 years, but was fired in January when an internal audit uncovered the fraud. Police say Romano took the money by writing legitimate claim checks to policy holders. She would then issue a duplicate check, forge a signature and deposit it in her personal account. AAA says no members or policy holders lost money as a result of this fraud.
Prosecutors have been investigating this case for five months. Romano turned herself in Thursday. She is free on $100,000 bond.
Prosecutors say there is a lot of documentation and evidence in this case. But Romano's attorney, Tom Wilson, is questioning whether is points to his client. Wilson says Romano leads a modest lifestyle and doesn't gamble or do drugs. Police have yet to find the missing money. Romano returns to court on May 30th.
