Memorial Day Weekend is the kick-off for the summer tourism season in Michigan. On Friday, state officials and tourism industry representatives met to promote in-state tourism.
According to AAA, 1.2 million travelers are expected to be on the roads this weekend. Tourism is the state's 3rd largest industry and in-state tourism accounts for 57-percent of all leisure travel in Michigan.
With a flat economy and tourists nervous about traveling far distances, Governor Jennifer Granholm says it’s the right time to create and market Michigan destinations.
According to Travel Michigan, travelers spend close to $13 billion annually in Michigan and visitor spending accounts for more than 150,000 Michigan jobs.
