Rainy Day Fund Used to Avoid Layoffs

Despite finding the funds to fill two police jobs, Lansing will loose about 20 police and fire positions to retirements as part of its budget solution.

Five percent of both the fire and police departments will see vacant positions.

The vacancies, a $50,000 cut to Lansing’s public relations budget, the spending of two million of the city’s rainy day fund and cuts in council travel funding all helped in preventing city layoffs and property tax increases.

While the budget is approved, the council says it will review some elements in upcoming meetings.
