Lansing area high school students are spending some time this summer learning the ins and outs of what could be the fastest growing trade in our area, construction.

There could be a manpower shortage in the next four to six years says Scott McDonald, Director of Apprenticeship at Michigan Laborers' Training & Apprenticeship Institute.

Mid-Michigan's constructions occupations will add more than 3,000 new and replacement jobs and area high school students are being primed to fill those slots. Seven students, part of the Career Readiness and Fitness Training or "CRAFT" program assembled in 2005 by Michigan's construction industry and the Lansing School District, will train for five days at the institute. They'll operate equipment and experience the physical side of construction.
