In a surprise ceremony, fifth grade teacher Bill Cecil was awarded Michigan Teacher of the Year by the Michigan Department of Education.
Cecil has taught in the Waverly Community School District for 17 years. He won the award out of 20 semifinalists. Before Monday morning, he didn't know he was going to win.
Students and teachers alike say Cecil is a creative educator. He uses acting and other group activities to teach social studies and language arts. His teaching philosophy revolves around leadership and positive motivation. He says his motto is Best Year Ever, giving students the motivation to set goals and work hard.
During the next school year, Cecil will work with the Department of Education to help improve public schools.
