Merit Scholarship Money

Senate republicans have drawn a line in the sand telling Gov. Granholm she cannot reduce the Merit Scholarship program by 80-percent. She wants to take $2000 from the $2,500 grant and divert it to health care.

"We disagree with the governor, " says the Senate Majority Leader Ken Sikkema. He says the voters decided last November to keep the awards for students who pass the MEAP exam rejecting at that time putting the money into health care.

The governor does not agree saying health care is more of a "core" government service and while she supports the scholarships, she believes citizens want the funds to cover health care for the elderly, young and needy.
