A gas main break behind a special education center in Lansing leads to the evacuation of its students and others nearby.
Construction crews working on the playground behind the Beekman Center punctured a gas main causing a leak. The two-inch gas main was hit with a post hole digger as they tried to install a sandbox.
All students at the center were evacuated and sent to Lansing's Hill Center, where parents were waiting to pick them up.
Nearby ForestView Elementary School was also evacuated for precautionary reasons. Consumers Energy officials describe it as a slow leak coming out and say it seemed to be disappointing.
The Lansing Fire Department says an ambulance was sent over to the Hill Center to check the students out but no one was transported away. School district officials say everything should be back to normal on Thursday.
