Sally Mercer was contemplating divorce and suspected infidelity that according to testimony during day one of Dr. Charles Mercer Jr.'s preliminary hearing. Dr. Mercer is charged with open murder in the 1968 death of his wife Sally.
The couple's daughter Sara was one of eight people called to testify Monday. She answered cautiously when asked if her father had told her her mother died from polio.
Former neighbor Eunice Klewecki was over at the Mercer's Okemos home the day Sally died. Klewecki said Sally was distraught and talked about wanting a divorce. Dr. Mercer returned home while the women were drinking coffee and Klewecki left the Mercer's home. In the days following Sally's death, she says Dr. Mercer came to her home and told her to be careful what she said to people.
Mercer's preliminary hearing continues Tuesday.
