Firefighters and police officers in Mid-Michigan are battling it out to see who will win this year's Battle for Blood. It's the sixth year the American Red Cross has sponsored the event. During the two week blood drive, police and firefighters compete to recruit blood donations.
The police have only won once, in 2003, while the firefighters have one every other year since the competition began in 2001. The reason behind the drive is to increase the number of donations during the summer months when it tends to drop.
The drive lasts for the next couple of weeks. It's located at the American Red Cross Lansing Blood Donor Center at 1729 E. Saginaw Avenue. The times are June 26th-30th from 7am-6:45pm, July 1st from 8:15 a.m.-2 p.m., July 3 from 8 a.m.-1:45 p.m., July 5 & 7 from 7 a.m.-6:45 p.m., and July 8 from 8:15 a.m.-2 p.m..
