Three separate incidents left three women hospitalized this weekend. Police say all were assaulted by boyfriends or former boyfriends.

In Jackson, 39-year-old Julie Varney was shot several times. Police found her boyfriend Roy Moten dead in her apartment. Varney is in stable condition at Foote Hospital. In Lansing, Police say a man doused his girlfriend in rubbing alcohol, lighting her and himself on fire. Both are still hospitalized. Police say a third woman was shot in the face and tossed in the Grand River after a date. She was able to crawl out and call police, but is in a medically induced coma.

Capitol Area Response Effort, the city of Lansing's domestic abuse response team, says police respond to thousands of domestic abuse calls each year. But it is still one of the most under reported crimes. C.A.R.E. coordinators say there are signs to look for, and family and friends often see these signs before the victim.

Watch for threatening behavior, or violence. Jealousy, controlling behavior and people who blame others for their problems and feelings are also signs. C.A.R.E. says anyone who feels unsafe should call an emergency hotline immediately. There are shelters in Lansing, and surrounding communities.
