School teachers in Michigan would be required to be certified in CPR and first aid under a new bill.
The House voted 94-to-9 Tuesday to send the legislation to the Senate.
CPR certification would be required to be certified as a teacher in Michigan under the bill.
The bill would require teachers to pay the cost of a CPR class -- estimated at between $30 and $50.
The bill would take effect on Jan. 1.
Supporters of the bill say the change is needed because the role of teachers is constantly expanding. Opponents say the requirement takes more time away from teachers' preparation for school.
