Ask any driver that takes the US-127/I-496 interchange, and they'll tell you it's more like NASCAR.
"Like a race track, there was very high speeds, people changing lanes, other people don't know what's happening with lanes ending and things like that and people getting cut off," said Scott Roberts, who drives on the interchange.
"Right there is a tough stretch," said Paul Maffett, a frequent driver on the interchange.
But that could soon change, effective Sunday, there's now one lane for Northbound US-127, one lane for Westbound I-496 and a decision lane in the middle.
Paul Maffett drives through the interchange at least once a day, and he says three lanes will make the interchange easier to understand, especially for out of town drivers.
"Mainly because you've got one stretch going one way and one stretch going the other way, if they take it down to three lanes instead of four, people would be able to figure it out," Maffett said.
"I think it would probably slow it down, so anything that slows it down would probably be a good thing," Roberts said.
With more traction on the roadway and now less lanes in the interchange, officials agree the new improvements are a safer solution for drivers.
"They're going to cut over, but with this new lane situation it should prevent them from running into somebody," said Sgt. Mark VandeWauwer of the East Lansing Police Department.
VandeWauwer says the coating recently applied to the pavement will also help in wet weather conditions.
"To increase the traction also which should help a lot, because often when it gets wet out there is when we have a lot of our problems," VandeWauwer said.
Problems they're hoping are a thing of the past.
