Buy Michigan first; that's what Governor Jennifer Granholm wants state leaders to do when contracting jobs. But in-state business owners may not be aware they can contract with the state or that they'll be given preference whenever possible.
So seminars are being held throughout the state to build awareness for the "Buy Michigan First" initiative. They're registering business owners, educating them on the bidding process and what to do when they get the contract.
Currently, 85 percent of state contracts go to Michigan businesses. The hope is that by April of next year that number will be up to 90 percent.
