Hurricane season officially begins Thursday, but the mid-Michigan chapter of the American Red Cross isn't waiting around to register volunteers.
For the very first time, Wednesday, a pre-deployment fair was held so new volunteers could sign up and existing volunteers could update their information. Last year, the chapter was overwhelmed by the number of people who showed up to sign up when hurricanes began hitting.
Emergency Services Coordinator Rachelle Wood says the National Weather Service is predicting another hectic hurricane season so they’re just trying to get a jump start on the volunteer process.
All new national disaster volunteers must fill out an application, interview, complete an orientation and get a background check. Existing members must update their information yearly.
