The Michigan Speaker of the House is blasting Democrats for not supporting Governor Engler's cigarette tax hike.

The governor wants to raise taxes another 50 cents to $1.25 per pack. The additional money would be used to ease the state's budget problems and funnel additional money to education.

But the vote fell two short of the 55 needed for passage.

Speaker Rick Johnson accused Democrats of supporting Joe Camel instead of Michigan's school kids. Democrats say they don't believe the state's money problems should be balanced on the backs' of smokers.

Leaders of the House and Senate say they'll cut state spending to balance the budget because they don't have support from Democrats.
