Smoking in a motor vehicle with a passenger under 4-years-old would become illegal in Michigan under terms of legislation pending in the state House.
The proposed penalty would be a civil infraction or a ticket. Courts would determine the cost of the fine if the bill becomes law.
The bill is sponsored by Republican Representative John Moolenaar of Midland.
He says children are particularly vulnerable to second-hand smoke, especially in a tight, closed space such as a vehicle.
