Electronic devices such as cell phones and pagers have become a part of our daily lives. New legislation could lift a ban of these devices in Michigan schools.

The state senate recently approved a bill that could leave this decision in the hands of local school boards. Electronic devices have been banned in Michigan schools since 1988.

In the face of rising concerns over terrorist threats, parents say the need to contact students in case of emergency is ever so important. They say they do understand the concerns schools have about disruptions in the classroom.

Lansing schools do not allow cell phones or pagers inside the school building and if found they are confiscated. School officials, though, say they are willing to make the necessary adjustments if the law is passed.
