Michigan State University and Spectrum Health have reached an agreement to start a medical school in West Michigan.

Spectrum Health estimates it will invest $85 million in building support and research for the school. The deal is expected to help recruit physicians, researchers and teachers to the medical school.

Other key partners in the project include the Van Andel Institute, St. Mary's Hospital, a state physicians group and Grand Valley State University.

A building site hasn't been determined but some second-year med students are expected to be studying in Grand Rapids by 2008.
