Fallen Officer From 1892 Honored

A police officer, killed in the line of duty, was honored Wednesday in Jackson-- 116 years after he died.

Officer Minor Cudihee, originally from Jackson, joined the police department in Tacoma, Washington in 1890. Two years later, he and his partner confronted two men lying on a sidewalk. Cudihee was stabbed during the argument and died on the street. He was 24 years old. The two men were found "Not Guilty" of his murder in 1893.

In 1987, a historian within the Tacoma Police Department learned of Cudihee's death and began an extensive search to find him and properly honor him as the department's first and youngest officer to be killed in the line. Just recently it discovered his burial site and thanks to a newspaper article in Jackson, found a living relative and today did what it set out to do 21 years ago.

"This is a very special day for us," said Tacoma Police Chief Don Ramsdell. "We get some closure for one of our fallen officers and to present his family with the Medal of Valor."

Kenneth Boley of Jackson is Minor Cudihee's great great nephew.
"I'm very proud, being a descendant of Minor's," he said. "It's an honor to receive the Medal of Valor-- the highest award given."

In the end, more than a dozen distant relatives came from around the state to the services at St. John's Cemetery.

The Jackson Police Department aided in that process and Chief Matt Heins found it impressive the Tacoma top brass hopped a three and a half hour plane flight to remember one of its own.

"I think it's important to recognize the officers who have fallen before us," said Heins. "I think it's amazing that he died in 1892 and the Tacoma Police Department spent at least 20 years trying to find this individual."
