The government is trying to determine whether recalled ground beef processed at an Ohio plant may be related to three cases of E-coli in Ohio children.
American Foods Group is recalling about 106,000 pounds of ground beef sold at Kroger and Meijer stores because it may be contaminated with E-coli. The Kroger stores are in Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. The Meijer stores are in Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Michigan.
Ohio Health Department spokesman Kristopher Weiss said the three children are sick with the same strain of E-coli. The USDA is investigating whether the recalled beef contains the same strain.
The recalled beef was sold in trays and as hamburger patties, and customers can return it to the store where it was bought for a refund.
The Kroger beef has code numbers 3024 and 3025 below the store logo. The Meijer brand has code number 3024 below the UPC bar code. American Foods has set up a customer hot line at 1-800-829-2838.
