Legislation for Drug Company Accountability

Currently, drug companies are not required to reveal safety test results. And in Michigan, they are granted the highest court privilege in the nation. According to House Democratic Leader Dianne Byrum, that needs to change.

"Citizens who feel they've been harmed do not have access to the courts to state the facts of the case because drug companies have a privileged status. But they need to be held accountable when their drugs harm or kill an individual."

This week, House Democrats unveiled a plan that would reverse the current legislation, allowing consumers to bring pharmaceutical companies to court. The proposed law would also require manufacturers to disclose all information regarding drug safety testing.

The legislation is currently ready for a vote. But Rep. Byrum expects it to be held off until after the November election.
