A study released earlier this week indicated that 80 percent of the time car seats are installed improperly, primarily because adults have difficulty understanding the directions. The National Safe Kids Campaign has put together a brochure with easy-to-read instructions and pictures, which should help eliminate much of the confusion.
"It's an easy read, and I think people will be more inclined to pick it up, read it, and stick it on their refrigerator to refer back to it as the child progresses to a bigger car seat," Mickie Kreft, Capital Area Safe Kids Coalition.
Sparrow Hospital offers free car seat inspections along with the Capital Area Safe Kids Coalition. Call 364-2616 for information or to schedule an appointment.
