State health department officials say there is no need to panic but want parents to stay alert for signs of severe flu illness in their children.

Thursday, doctors say a fourth grader at Frost Elementary School in Jackson died from the flu.

Nine-year-old Natalie Emmons is the 8th Michigan child killed by flu-like illness in the past month.

The health department says signs a parent should be aware of and get medical attention include stiffness and soreness of the neck, sudden high fever, persistent headache, difficulty breathing and disorientation.

Doctors say the number of deaths so far this year is not unusual.
