List of School Workers With Criminal Convictions to Be Withheld

The state Department of Education can't immediately make public a list of school workers with criminal convictions because it's inaccurate, an Ingham County judge has ruled.

Circuit Judge Joyce Draganchuk said this morning that releasing the statewide list to the media would violate the integrity of teachers and other employees who are wrongfully on the list.

A new law that targets sex offenders is prompting the state to check the criminal history of more than 200-thousand school employees.

The ruling followed testimony from four teachers who were flagged for drug and other offenses but said they had never committed any crimes.

The Detroit News and other media outlets have filed a Freedom of Information Act request for the list.
