A US Marine from the Grand Rapids area has died in Iraq.
The family of Corporal Ross Smith, of Wyoming, says he was killed Wednesday in an explosion.
The 21-year-old Smith was a 2002 graduate of Wyoming Park High School.
He was first deployed in February 2003 and was on his third tour in Iraq. He was months away from completing his four-year military commitment.
Smith's mother, Sue Smith, says she had spoken to her youngest son Tuesday. During the rushed phone call she said a care package was on the way and told him to stay safe.
She says her son decided to enlist when he was in high school. She asked him to reconsider after the 2001 terrorist attacks but he told her no, that he was needed more than ever.
She and her husband, Mark Smith, also have two other sons.
