Cameras Keeping Watch

You may have noticed little cameras perched atop traffic lights around mid-Michigan. Don't worry; it's not big brother keeping watch. It's actually a modern way to keep traffic moving smoothly.

The cameras don't take pictures or even record anything. They simply scan your vehicle and tell the traffic light when to change.

The City of Lansing has 22 systems installed. The Ingham County Road Commission has set up six around the area and the Michigan Department is responsible for all of the systems on state trunk lines.

The City of Lansing will soon be updating its system. Within the next year, a traffic operations center will be pulling all the data and engineers will be able to respond to traffic delays right from their desks.
