The Prestige Aircraft Company has the exclusive license to assemble "Light Sport Aircraft" to be sold anywhere in North America. The planes were approved by the Federal Aviation Administration in August of 2005, but have been flying for years in Europe.
Entrepreneur Dale Smith, of Jackson, says the project will initially create 17 to 20 new jobs and eventually that number will grow to about 500 to 600 jobs in Michigan over five years. "Not just directly with production but all the other service industries, the flight training, rental aircraft places, flight schools and the list goes on," said Smith.
Production will start in about five weeks. The aircraft is a two-passenger plane designed to be lighter, faster, more cost-effective and more fuel-efficient than many other planes. Smith said the average cost is $85,000 to $100,000.
