Trans fat is used in many snack-products to extend their shelf-life, but experts say the synthetic fat is unhealthy and causes high-cholesterol and heart disease.
So starting January 1st, any packaged food with more than 1/2 a gram of trans fat will have to say so on its label. Many companies including FritoLay and Kraft have already not only complied with the new law, but have also changed their recipes to reduce trans fat.
Restaurants are not included in this new law. Many manufacturers have already changed their labels, others are waiting to use their already-made supply.
Nutritionists say consumers should strive to avoid trans fat altogether.
