Local Donations Outshined by Natural Disasters

But that's not to say Mid-Michigan hasn't been more than generous this year. In fact, donations to help with hurricane relief reached a record high of $2.5 million at the local chapter this year.

But those national disasters have hurt local funds. It's not just the Red Cross that is affected. "I think in a way it's that people only have so much to give," said coordinator at the Mid-Michigan chapter Kathy Faber.

Faber said they depend on local donations to aid local victims of natural disasters such as house fires. Local funds are also used to feed to hungry and get messages to soldiers deployed abroad.

Anyone wanting to make a donation to the local Red Cross this year to be tax-deductible must have it in by December 30.
