Woods Stoves Heat Up, Houses Burn Down

The month of December is traditionally a busy month for firefighters, but this year high heating costs are adding a couple of more hazards to the holiday list.

House fires are on the rise in mid-Michigan. Delhi Township Fire Marshal Pat Brown says his department has responded to seven major fires since the first of December. Those seven blazes are more major fires then Delhi Township has responded to all year. Four of the fires are linked to either wood stoves or fireplaces.

Brown says keeping the alternative heating source clean is the best way to prevent an out control wood stove, chimney or fireplace fire. Clean your wood stove or fireplace twice a season and check the chimney regularly for cracks.
