On a unanimous vote and with the full blessing of the governor, the State Board of Education has voted to require 18 credits in a variety of academic courses as a requirement for a high school diploma starting with the freshman class next year.
Students would face mandatory math, science, social science and world language credits along with one credit each in the Fine Arts and Physical Education.
The governor applauded the move, but some educators say they do not have the money to pay for the beefed-up standards which require legislative approval.
