Airport Runway Safety

The airport just finished a $3 million project to lengthen the runway to 8,000 feet. That's compared to Midway's 6,500 foot runway.

They say they, unlike Midway, have a 1,000 foot safety zone where a plane could slide if there is a problem.

They say heavier planes need longer runways, so lengthening the runway is both a safety and an economic issue. Robert Colt, airport spokesman, says it helps attract new airlines that may have bigger jets.
