Early Projections Show Lansing Faces Another Big Deficit

By  |

The City of Lansing's current budget is within bounds, but already numbers are surfacing for a larger then expected deficit for fiscal year 2006-2007.

The shortfall ranges anywhere from six to $10 million, that's what city council members and Mayor-Elect Virg Bernero are saying. Mayor Benavides' Executive Assistant would not confirm the quote saying it's too early in the budget process to give a number.

If the high number holds up, Mayor-Elect Bernero would be forced to cut nearly 10 percent of the city's total budget. He takes office January 1 and must present a budget balancing plan by the third Monday in March.

Bernero says his transition team is already working on the budget.
