LANSING (WILX)-- A local Lansing church skipped service today to do a city wide clean up project.

"I Love My City" is a project started by SouthNaz Community Church that touches on a little bit of everything. On Sunday more than 400 volunteers delivered fresh produce to the elderly, lunch to firefighters, cleaned up vacant homes, gave out free hot-dogs and haircuts, and cleaned of the outside to four local schools.

"We instead are taking our service to our community and to the people to show that we love them through our service," said project leader Angie Seagren.

The congregation paired up with more than ten other organizations to complete the cleanup.

"We had a vision of partnering with local businesses , churches, and government. When we work together the job becomes a lot easier," said youth pastor Kiesha Plaskett.

They cleaned up the outside of Everett High School, Attwood Elementary, Gardener Elementary, and North Elementary. All of the schools were in desperate need of a touch up.

Playgrounds were mulched, fences re-done, and roofs were patched up. Even the community greenhouse outside of North Elementary was fixed up.

"The greenhouse had some vandalism. There were broken panels, and graffiti inside. We're restoring that back to a usable condition," said project leader Rex Merriott.

Something as simple as a tetherball can make all of the difference for a community. The church raised 20 thousand dollars for the whole project. The rest was donated.

"Doing this will hopefully catch on as a trend and we will do this again next year," said Attwood Volunteer Carrie Fata-Rue.
