The first case of HIV was diagnosed in 1981. Now more than 40-million people worldwide are infected with at least 17,000 in Michigan.

Victims and family members affected by the virus met today to remember those lost to the disease, as advocates marched to raise awareness and reduce the stigma of HIV/AIDS.

Awareness has been dropping over the past few years and director of the Lansing Area AIDS Network says this is contributing to the spread of the disease. The number of people infected worldwide increased more than seven percent in the past year and there were at least 800 new cases diagnosed in Michigan.
