Bar Time May Lengthen

Michigan may soon let bars and other businesses stay open after 2 a.m. to provide entertainment.

The state Senate has voted unanimously to pass a bill that lets liquor licensees apply for a permit to stay open beyond the time they have to stop serving alcohol.

The bill now heads to Governor Granholm's desk.

Supporters say the bill expands business opportunities for bars and other establishments.

They also say patrons will have more time to sober up before driving home.

To get a permit, a business would need approval from the state Liquor Control Commission, the local police chief and the local legislative body.
