School lobby looks for ways to reform education by lumping everything into one bill.
The so-called K-16 Coalition is discussing the possibility of including four major education reform issues in one package in order to gain legislative support for the annual guaranteed funding of state schools every year.
In addition to the automatic inflationary increase, the package could include major cost savings in the teacher health care and retirement systems along with the high school course changes suggested by the State Board of Education this week. This represents a major strategy shift for the group if they go this route.
Senator Wayne Kuipers who chairs the education committee does not like the idea saying each issue should rise or fall on its own merit. A spokesperson for the coalition says the issue is being discussed and a final decision on linking them could come by the end of the month.
