The nation's strategy to prepare for and react to a flu pandemic is three-fold. The plan includes:
- Early detection and reporting of outbreaks.
- Stockpiling anti-virals and revamping the nation's antiquated vaccine manufacturing process.
- Ensuring all state and local communities have an emergency plan.
Michigan's acting state medical executive Dr. Dean Sienko says discussions are underway to create the state's plan. He says issues like how vaccine and medicine would be distributed, and how hospital beds would be utilized are being worked out.
For now, Dr. Sienko says the public should not ask their doctors for anti-virals or stockpile respiratory masks. But they should educate themselves about the current bird flu circulating Asia and found in Europe. They should think about how they could minimize effects if a pandemic hits.
