Republican Jack Hoogendyk is unlikely to face an opponent in Michigan's U.S. Senate race until he runs into longtime incumbent Democrat Carl Levin in November.
Levin and Hoogendyk each submitted signatures Monday to run for the Senate.
Tuesday is the deadline for candidates to turn in signatures to get on the primary ballot. It's looking unlikely that Levin or Hoogendyk will face an opponent in the Aug. 5 election.
Hoogendyk said Monday it will be tough to defeat Levin, but it can be done. The Kalamazoo lawmaker is finishing his third two-year term in the state House.
Levin, of Detroit, was first elected to the Senate in 1978. He chairs the Senate's Armed Services Committee and is running for a sixth six-year term.
