OSHTEMO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -- Some state Republican lawmakers want to temporarily eliminate Michigan's sales tax on gasoline for the summer driving season.
Republican Representative Jack Hoogendyk says suspending the sales tax isn't a "silver bullet." But it would provide some immediate relief from high fuel prices.
Hoogendyk was in Kalamazoo County to discuss the proposal along with fellow GOP Representatives Rick Shaffer and Neal Nitz.
The proposal reportedly would drop the 6-percent sales tax from Memorial Day to Labor Day. But it wouldn't touch the state's 19-cent-per-gallon gasoline tax that's used for road construction and maintenance.
